A total of RM720 million has been paid by the Social Security Organisations (Socso) to its contributors involved in commuting accidents from January last year until June this year.

Human Resource minister Datuk Seri Dr S.Subramaniam said from January to June this year, 30,575 accident cases were reported to Socso with commuting mishaps making up one-third of the total, at 12,893 cases, mostly involving motorcyclists and which also led to fatalities.

He told this to reporters after opening the 2012 Socso Members National Motorcycling Safety Programme here today.

The programme, themed `Safety Assured When Commuting To Work’ was aimed at boosting motorcycle safety among its contributors.

In conjunction with the programme, which would be until the end of the year, Socso would also distribute 5,000 units of helmets and safety jackets to contributors nationwide.
